Spruce Wood

  1. White Spruce Wood:
  • Species: Derived from Picea Glauca.
  • Origin: Northern North America, especially Canada, Alaska, Europe.
  • Durability: Low to moderate natural durability, not naturally resistant to decay or insects; best used in protected environments or when treated.
  • Highlights: Light and soft with a fine, even texture, it has a creamy white to pale yellow color with a subtle grain, is easy to work, glue, and finish, offers a high strength-to-weight ratio that makes it popular for structural applications, and has excellent acoustic properties that make it suitable for soundboards.
  • Form: Dimensional Lumber, Boards, Plywood.
  • Grade: Select Structural, #2&Btr.
  • Moisture: Typically kiln-dried to (8 – 12%) moisture content, with (8 – 10%) for interior use and (10 – 12%) for exterior or structural applications.
  • Dimensions Available: Boards & Lumber: Thickness: 2.5 cm, 5 cm, 7.5 cm, 10 cm and thicker / Width: 5 cm – 30 cm / Length: Typically, 1.8 m – 6 m (longer custom lengths are available). Dimensional Lumber (Construction Use): 5×10 cm, 5×15 cm, 5×20 cm, 5×25 cm, 10×10 cm, 10×15 cm, 15×15 cm, 15×20 cm. Beams & Timbers: Larger structural sizes such as 15×25 cm, 20×20 cm, 20×25 cm, 20×30 cm. Panels / Plywood: Standard sheet size: 1.22 × 2.44 m, Thickness: 0.6 cm – 2.5 cm.
  • Janka Hardness: ~480 lbf.
  • Grain: Fine, straight grain.
  • Color: White to pale yellow.
  • Water Resistance: Low natural resistance to moisture and decay; requires treatment for exposure to damp or wet conditions.
  • Certification: FSC, PEFC.
  • Outdoor Suitability: Limited, suitable for outdoor use only when properly treated and maintained.
  • Indoor Suitability: Good, performs well indoors in dry conditions, commonly chosen for structural framing and decorative work.
  • Estimated Prices: Per Cubic Meter (m3) = ~US $150 – $400+ / Price per Piece = ~US $4 – $12+.
  • Use Cases: Structural framing, studs, joists, and trusses. Millwork, interior trim, and paneling. Pulp and paper production. Soundboards for pianos and guitars (due to excellent resonance). Plywood and engineered wood products.

2. Norway Spruce Wood:

  • Species: Derived from Picea Abies.
  • Origin: Native to Northern, Central, and Eastern Europe; widely cultivated across Europe for timber and Christmas trees.
  • Durability: It has low natural durability and is not resistant to decay or insect attack, requiring treatment if used in exposed outdoor conditions.
  • Highlights: Light and soft with a straight grain and fine, even texture, it has a pale cream to light yellowish-brown color, is lightweight with a good strength-to-weight ratio, offers excellent acoustic properties that make it ideal for musical instruments such as violins and soundboards, and is easy to work, glue, and finish.
  • Form: Lumber, Beams, Panels.
  • Grade: Structural, Joinery.
  • Moisture: Typically kiln-dried to (8 – 12%) moisture content, with (8 – 10%) for interior use and (10 – 12%) for exterior or structural applications to enhance stability and reduce defects.
  • Dimensions Available: Boards & Lumber: Thickness: 2.5 cm, 5 cm, 7.5 cm, 10 cm and thicker / Width: 5 cm – 30 cm / Length: Typically, 1.8 m – 6 m (longer lengths available by request).
