Timbers Oasis

Hemlock Wood

  • Species: Primarily refers to Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla), while Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is less commonly used commercially.
  • Origin: Western Hemlock: Pacific Northwest of North America (U.S. and Canada). Eastern Hemlock: Northeastern U.S. and Eastern Canada.
  • Durability: Low to moderate natural durability, not naturally resistant to decay or insects; needs treatment for prolonged outdoor exposure.
  • Highlights: With a light to medium reddish-brown color and a straight, uniform grain, it is non-resinous with a fine, even texture, strong, relatively hard, and dimensionally stable once seasoned. It is easy to machine, glue, and finish, and its odorless, splinter-resistant nature makes it well-suited for interior joinery.
  • Form: Lumber, Panels, Timbers.
  • Grade: C&Better, Construction.
  • Moisture: Typically, around (6 – 8%), which helps improve its stability and reduces the risk of warping or cracking.
  • Dimensions Available: Boards & Lumber: Thickness: 2.5 cm, 5 cm, 7.5 cm, 10 cm and thicker / Width: 5 cm – 30 cm / Length: Typically, 1.8 m – 6 m (longer custom lengths can be sourced). • Water Resistance: Low natural resistance; absorbs moisture easily and decays if untreated.
  • Certification: FSC.
  • Outdoor Suitability: Limited, can be used outdoors only if properly treated; untreated wood is prone to decay.
  • Indoor Suitability: Good, widely used indoors due to its stability and ease of finishing.
