Silver Fir Wood

  • Species: Derived from Abies Alba (European Silver Fir).
  • Origin: Native to Central and Southern Europe, particularly the Alps and Carpathians.
  • Durability: Moderate – not highly resistant to decay or insects; best suited for interior use unless treated.
  • Highlights: Lightweight softwood with uniform texture; easy to work, glue, and finish; stable with minimal shrinkage.
  • Form: Available as sawn timber, beams, boards, plywood, veneer, and construction lumber.
  • Grade: Commonly graded A–C depending on knots, appearance, and defects.
  • Moisture: Kiln-dried to (8 – 12%), (8 – 10%) for interior, (10 –12%) for structural or exterior with treatment.
  • Dimensions Available: Sawn Timber / Boards: Thickness: 2.5 cm – 10 cm / Width: 10 cm – 40 cm / Length: 2 m – 6 m. Beams: Thickness: 10 – 30 cm / Width: 10 – 30 cm / Length: up to 6 m+. Panels / Veneer: Thickness: 0.5 – 40 mm depending on application.
  • Janka Hardness: ~380 lbf (1,690 N).
  • Grain: Straight and even, with a fine to medium texture.
  • Color: Pale whitish to light yellowish-brown heartwood and sapwood with little distinction.
  • Water Resistance: Low – requires protective treatment for exterior exposure.
  • Certification: FSC® or PEFC available from certified sources.
  • Outdoor Suitability: Limited; requires treatment for prolonged outdoor use.
  • Indoor Suitability: Very suitable due to light weight, stability, and ease of processing.
