Chestnut Wood

  • Species: Derived from Castanea Genus, Primarily European Chestnut (Castanea Sativa), Also American Chestnut (Castanea Dentata).
  • Origin: Native to Europe, North America, and parts of Asia, with European Chestnut widely available and American Chestnut mostly sourced as reclaimed wood.
  • Durability: Naturally durable due to its high tannin content, making it resistant to decay, rot, and insect attack, much like oak.
  • Highlights: Lighter than oak yet strong, easy to work with both hand and machine tools, and ages gracefully with a warm, rich patina.
  • Form: Sawn Timber (Boards, Beams, Planks), Flooring & Paneling, Turned Items & Furniture Components, Veneer Sheets.
  • Grade: FAS / Prime Grade, Select, Common Grades (#1 Common, #2 Common), Rustic / Character Grade.
  • Moisture: Green (Fresh-Cut) / AD (12 – 18%) / KD (6 – 10%).
  • Dimensions Available: Thickness: 25 – 75 mm / Width: 100 – 300 mm+ / Length = 2 m – 4 m.
  • Janka Hardness: European Chestnut: ~540 lbf (2,400 N) / American Chestnut: ~540 lbf (2,400 N).
  • Grain: Straight grain with a coarse, open texture, resembling oak but being lighter and less dense.
  • Color: Pale brown to light golden brown and gradually darkens with age into a rich, warm brown.
  • Water Resistance: Naturally water and decay-resistant thanks to its tannins, making it excellent for outdoor use.
  • Certification: FSC, PEFC available.
